AN ARGUMENT in St Mary’s Butts in the early hours of this morning has landed one 31-year-old man in hospital and led to three more people being held in custody.

The victim was attacked following a dispute between two groups in the central Reading area.

He was punched by one assailant and was stabbed by a second person carrying a knife.

He was rushed to hospital where he is being treated. His injuries are thought to be non life-threatening.

Officers discovered the wounded man when they arrived on the scene at 3.41am today.

They then found a suspect at her property in Basingstoke Road, who locked herself in and threatened to harm herself and anyone else who tried to arrest her.

After closing the road, police safely arrested one Reading woman on suspicion of GBH and another 19-year-old woman from Reading on suspicion of ABH.

In the aftermath of the arrests, missiles were thrown at police from the same residence, causing damage to a windscreen.

A 27-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, assaulting and obstructing police.

All three are currently in custody.

Insp James Tribe of Reading police station said: "We would like to thank the community around Basingstoke Road for their patience as we closed the road to allow a safe environment for officers to negotiate with the woman who was threatening to harm herself.

"Fortunately we have managed to arrest all three people without injury."
