A FORMER England youth international footballer charged with raiding a bookmaker is set to face further charges, including firearms offences, prosecutors said today.

Nathan Ashton, who once played in the Premier League for Fulham, denied today having any involvement in the hold-up at a branch of Corals bookies.

However it emerged during the court hearing that police officers are set to interview the 28-year-old later this week in connection to a number of other matters.

Prosecutor Nigel Ogborne told the court that Ashton was likely to be charged as a result.

Ashton - who, as a youngster, represented England at every level from U16 to U19 - has already been charged with robbery following an incident at a bookmaker that led to £480 in cash being taken.

He appeared at Aylesbury Crown Court on Monday morning to formally enter a not guilty plea to the charge, which was made following a raid at a branch of Corals in Cressex Road, High Wycombe, Bucks, on October 30.

During the course of the hearing however it emerged he is due to be charged with three more offences, said to have been committed in Reading.

Mr Ogborne told the court: "I know he [Ashton] doesn't know this, but the police are interested in interviewing him. They will be interviewing him later this week.

"They relate to three offences in the Reading area, including dangerous driving and a firearms offence."

He added that police officers would seek to try the offences at Reading Crown Court.

Judge Francis Sheridan ordered for a further hearing to take place at Aylesbury on January 29, when it was likely a ruling that the robbery charge would also be tried at Reading at the same time will be made.

Ashton, of Pircroft Avenue, Reading, listened to the proceedings via a video link from Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes, where he is currently on remand.

He started his career as a youngster at Crystal Palace before moving to Fulham, where he made one appearance in a 3-1 Premier League victory over Reading in front of 22,000 people in March 2007.

Ashton's most recent Football League club were Wycombe Wanderers, where he made 13 appearances in the 2008/09 season. After leaving to join AFC Wimbledon he then drifted around a number of non-league clubs.

His occupation was given to police as unemployed, but prior to his arrest he was the assistant manager of non-league side Marlow.

He played in Marlow's last match before the robbery, a 5-0 win over Bashley in the Southern League.

It is alleged that Ashton had an unidentified accomplice with him when he stolen the money from Simon Sauvary from the bookies.

The court heard today that Ashton denies being one of the two people who carried out the raid.
