Children at Micklands Pre-School have been celebrating harvest and helping members of the community.

Last week the children, aged between 2 an 4 years, visited older people in the community as well as taken harvest donations to a church who will distribute it to local charities.

The harvest visits were part of the Micklands Road pre-school's work forge links with the community and helping others.

Supervisor Deanna Stone said first the children took a trip to St Lukes and The Oaks Care Home, Emmer Green, to visit residents and sing some songs.

After donations from the children and parents the children visited Caversham Baptist Church, Prospect Street, where they were given a guided tour and listened to a story.

She said: "We visited St Lukes and they had baked cakes for the children and we all had a good sing-a-long.

"We were welcomed into Caversham Baptist Church and the children were given a guided tour.

"They were really interested in the stained glass windows and the organ and asking lots of questions about them. There were really interested in their environment."

The pre-school handed over their donation or tinned harvest food donations were being given to Readifood and Berkshire Women's Aid as well as being used by the church's own weekly community lunch.

Miss Stone said: " We are celebrating harvest and our British culture and being kind to others in our community.

"It is great to know that the donations we collected will be used to help out other families less fortunate than ourselves.

"The children know they are part of a community and can help other within that."

The pre-school, rated outstanding by Ofsted, has also celebrated harvest by tending to the vegetable patch in its garden and using some of the produce for snack time for the children to try the fruits of their labours, as well as making their own bread to share.
