A MAN who swore at a member of the public has been jailed for breaching his Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO).

Daniel Hill was arrested after he verbally abused the passerby who had asked him to move from the doorway of a town centre coffee shop.

In court the 28-year-old later said he had been asleep at the time he was asked to move after spending the night huddled outside the Starbucks in Queen Victoria Street.

He was jailed for four weeks.

His ASBO had forbidden him from acting in an anti-social manner in any public place.

The order was issued by South East Hampshire magistrates in August 2014 and applies across England.

PC Michelle Clements, ASB officer in Reading, said: "The order states that Hill is not to act in an anti-social manner in any public place, or ask members of the public for money. He breached the Order on the 10th May after repeatedly swearing at a member of public who'd asked Mr Hill to move from the doorway of Starbucks in Queen Victoria Street, where Mr Hill admitted in court that he'd slept in the doorway the previous night and was still asleep when asked to move."

Hill, of Portsmouth, was arrested following the exchange on May 10 and found guilty at Reading Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He denied breaching his ASBO.

Insp Keith Stacey said: "We are aware that such incidents can be distressing to members of the community, and Abbey and Battle neighbourhood policing team is working hard to address anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

"We urge anyone who witnesses acts of anti-social behaviour to report them to the team which will deal with them robustly."
