PASSING the maths GCSE is daunting enough for most students, but one bright spark in Tilehurst managed to achieve an A* in his exam - and he’s only 11-years-old.

Saleem Rashid, from Calcot, was recommended for the exam in June by teachers at Birch Copse Primary School due to his natural ability for the subject and, with the school’s help, exceeded expectations with the result.

The talented youngster told the Chronicle he enjoyed the experience and, not letting the achievement go to his head, declared he was ‘quite happy’ with the feat.

His father, Adnan, said: “I am very proud. He has worked very hard for it. It’s a huge thing for a child of that age to achieve. As a family, we are grateful for the school for giving him this opportunity.”

Saleem is now at Reading School in Erleigh Road and his father said he hopes his son continues to work hard, enjoy himself and make a success of whatever he wants to do.

Birch Copse headteacher John Mickewhite, who helped Saleem prepare for the exam, said: “He is a very modest and likeable boy, who has taken all this in his stride.

“He learnt new skills exceptionally quickly and really enjoyed a challenge.

“Saleem’s parents were extremely supportive of him, and of the school.”
