JON Dadi Bodvarsson admitted it was a ‘tough one to swallow’ after his Bristol City horror show.
Royals’ summer signing from Wolves missed two golden chances to score before Aden Flint cracked home a late winner for the Robins in their 1-0 victory.
Reading’s defeat on Saturday was their first against Bristol City in eight meetings, while also ending their 13-match unbeaten league run at Madejski Stadium.
But the result could have been different had Bodvarsson converted one of his opportunities, both created by debutant Sone Aluko and both missed from no more than six yards out.
Icelandic international Bodvarsson groaned: “We had a lot of chances to put the game to bed.
“The manager just said to us that if we want to win games then we have to put our chances away.
“We defended well and it was an unlucky goal to concede.
“It’s tough to swallow.
“It wasn’t our day and we need to learn from it and come back stronger.”
Bristol City celebrate their victory at Madejski Stadium.
Bodvarsson was one of seven new signing brought in by manager Jaap Stam over the summer after a £1m switch from Wolves.
The 25-year-old netted his first goal for Reading in the 2-0 victory at Birmingham City before the recent international break, but was unable to add to his tally on Saturday.
However, he hailed the impact Aluko had on his debut following his club-record transfer from Fulham.
“We know how good he is and it’s the same with Mo (Barrow),” he declared. “They will be really important players for us.
“You can see how good they are on the ball with their dribbling and off the ball creating space for me and others.
“Those are the kind of players you want to be around.”
With no midweek fixture due to the postponement of the home clash with Barnsley, Stam’s men have a full week to recover from the Bristol City loss before making the short trip to Brentford’s Griffin Park tomorrow Saturday (3pm).
Royals also entertain Premier League Swansea City in the Carabao Cup third round next Tuesday night (8pm ko).
Bodvarsson added: “We need to bounce back, that’s really important. It will be a tough game at Brentford but we need to keep the structure we have built up and stick to our game plan.”
