BURGHFIELD produced one of the shocks of the day in the Berks & Bucks Sunday Intermediate Cup last weekend, writes Dave Wright.

The side lying second from bottom of the Premier Division knocked out the Senior Division’s second-placed club, Dee Road Rangers 3-2.

Another Senior side to suffer a cup defeat at the hands lower opposition were Polonia who lost 5-3 at home to Division Two side Maiden Place in the third round of the Berks & Bucks Junior Cup.

In the league, table-topping Reading Irish beat Purley 3-1 to make it seven wins out of eight, but Kidmore End missed a chance to move up to third place by losing 3-2 at home to Woodley Wanderers.

Ghana Stars secured their first league win of the season, defeating Richfield Rovers 4-1 in their bottom-of-the-table clash. Stars remain bottom, but are now two points behind Richfield having played three fewer games.

In the Premier Division, second-placed Athletico Forest defeated the fourth club Southcote Colts 4-3, while Woodley United returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over basement club 116 Exiles.

Woodley got off to a flying start, with Ollie Jones netting what turned out to be the decisive goal after five minutes after latching onto a pinpoint pass from skipper Danny Blatchford and firing home.

Woodley should have scored more to make it a comfortable win, but were guilty wasting chances.

Pete Shay and Jack Shone both impressed for Woodley, but goalkeeper Chris Harris took the man-of-the-match honours following some fantastic saves between the sticks to help secure the three points.

Joining Burghfield in the next round of the B&B Junior Cup are Richfield Rovers Reserves, 2-0 winners at Park Villa, but Premier leaders Eldon Celtic crashed out 4-1 at Prestige Worldwide.

Division One sides Pangbourne & Basildon Barbarians and Imaan both enjoyed success in the third round of the B&B Junior Cup, defeating Brimpton Rangers 6-4 and Binfield Royals 3-1 respectively.

On the league scene, second-placed The Bull charged through Burghfield by a 4-0 margin, AFC Bradfield won 4-2 away to SC United, Woodley Wanderers Reserves squeezed home 2-1 at Spencers Wood and WS Hobnob beat Henley Town by the odd goal in three.

There were plenty of goals at Douai Park, where Woolhampton went down 6-4 to AFC Burghfield Reserves, who are now unbeaten in five games.

In Division Two, Sportsman made it seven wins out of seven with an emphatic 6-0 defeat of Loxwood Park Rangers.

Coley Park also recorded their seventh win but from eight games with a 2-1 victory at bottom club Whitley Athletic, who were suffering their seventh straight league defeat.

Southbank, having lost 5-0 at Coley Park a week earlier, roared back to form to slam 116 Exiles Reserves 6-0, which was one more goal than by which Berkshire Rovers overcame Forest.

Tilehurst Club Reserves beat league rivals Arborfield 4-0 in the B&B Junior Cup.

Division Three pacemakers Southcote Colts extended their unbeaten run to eight games by defeating Toga Sports 4-0.

Twyford Comets are just two points behind the leaders with a game in hand following their 7-1 trouncing of Loddon Valley Rangers.

Eighth-placed Delta Vigo inflicted a 4-1 defeat on Mortimer Reserves, who remain fourth in the table having played more games (nine) than all the sides above them.

No change in the leading placings in Division Four with the top three sides also keeping their unbeaten tags. Leaders South Reading won 5-1 at Sanctuary Strikers, Tilehurst Club A beat Fox & Hounds 3-1 and Theale crushed Calcot Royals 8-0.

Six Bells lost ground on the top trio when they were held to a 5-5 draw at home by Borussia Teeth.

Shinfield Rangers won 4-2 against Burghfield Reserves, Shinfield Park United silenced The Bugle with a 5-3 away win and New England edged home 3-2 at Caversham United, who are still seeking their first league win of the season.

The fourth round draw of the B&B Junior Cup includes Prestige Worldwide v Pangbourne & Basildon, Richfield Rovers Reserves v Imaan and Tilehurst Club v Maiden Place, all ties to be played on December 17.
