Gareth Southgate has announced his 33-man Pre-Euro 2024 training squad for the upcoming European Championship.
The tournament, due to start in less than a month, is taking place in Germany and features players such as Adam Wharton, Jude Bellingham and Conor Gallagher who were playing in the Championship as recently as 2020.
But when did they last play Reading?

GOALKEEPERS
Jordan Pickford (Preston North End) - Saturday, December 12, 2015
The England number one has not played Reading in seven years, when the Royals failed to score past him in net for the Lilywhites. Joe Garner’s goal was the difference, with Martin Kuhl in temporary charge following the dismissal of Steve Clarke.
Aaron Ramsdale- N/A
Dean Henderson (Sheffield United)- Saturday, February 16, 2019
Manchester United loanee Henderson had very little to do the last time he featured against Reading, with the Blades easing to a 4-0 win at Bramall Lane on route to promotion to the Premier League.
James Trafford- N/A
DEFENDERS
Jarrad Branthwaite- N/A
Lewis Dunk (Brighton and Hove Albion)- Saturday, February 25, 2017
Brighton born and bred, the centre-back captained his side to Premier League promotion in 2016/17 as runners-up, ahead of third-place Reading. Dunk played the entire 90 minutes as the Seagulls cruised to a 3-0 win at the AMEX live on Sky.
Joe Gomez (Charlton Athletic)- Saturday, March 21, 2015
Young defender Gomez picked up an assist for the Addicks from right-back as Guy Luzon's East London outfit beat Steve Clarke's Royals 3-2 at the Valley.
Marc Guehi (Swansea City)- Saturday, April 25, 2021
Veljko Paunovic's Royals had run out of steam by late April and their season-long promotion push fell short. Guehi was booked in a 2-2 draw at the SCL Stadium, with the Swans losing in the play-offs.
Ezri Konsa (Brentford)- Saturday, April 13, 2019
Yakou Meite's brace was enough for Jose Gomes' resurgent Royals to beat Brentford 2-1 back in 2019, keeping the club in the Championship for another year.
Harry Maguire (Manchester United)- Saturday, January 28, 2022
Centre-back Maguire captained the Red Devils on Paul Ince's return to Old Trafford, with the hosts earning a 3-1 victory over Reading. Amadou Mbengue scored for the visitors, but it is perhaps best remembered for Andy Carroll's sending-off.
Jarell Quansah- N/A
Luke Shaw (Southampton)- Sunday, April 6, 2013
Over a decade ago teenage sensation Shaw was lining up at the Madejski Stadium for the 2-0 win which all-but confirmed the Royals’ relegation back to the Championship at the first attempt.
John Stones (Everton)- Tuesday, September 22, 2015
The centre-back was a highly thought of youngster when he was part of the Everton side to knock Reading out of the League Cup in 2015. Blackman’s strike saw the Royals take the lead, but Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu turned the game on its head.
Kyle Walker (Tottenham)- Tuesday, January 1, 2013
Another decade-long wait, Kyle Walker started in Spurs’ 3-1 win over Reading on New Years Day. Pavel Pogrebnyak gave the Royals an early lead at White Hart Lane, but Michael Dawson, Emmanuel Adebayor and Clint Dempsey secured the win.
Kieran Trippier (Burnley)- Saturday, May 3, 2014
Already-promoted Burnley visited Berkshire on the final day of the 2013/14 campaign knowing Reading needed a win to reach the play-offs. A 2-2 draw looked to be enough, but Leonardo Ulloa's stoppage-time winner for Brighton saw Nigel Adkins' side pipped to the post.
MIDFIELDERS
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool Under-23)- Monday, March 3, 2017
The 26-year-old wing-back has never played Reading in a full fixture, so youth matches will have to count. A 5-1 hammering for the Reds over seven years ago was the last time ‘TAA’ lined up against the Royals.
Conor Gallagher (Swansea City)- Wednesday, July 22, 2020
A remarkable game during the ‘Project Restart’ to round up the 2019/20 season, Swansea scored three goals in the final 25 minutes to leapfrog Nottingham Forest into the play-offs with the final kick of the game.
Curtis Jones (Liverpool Under-18s)- Saturday, April 8, 2017
A teenage Jones played 78 minutes at Hogwood Park as David Dodds' Young Royals beat Neil Critchley's Reds. Danny Loader, now of Porto, and Cameron Green scored for Reading in the 2-1 victory.
Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United)- Saturday, January 28, 2022
Mainoo was a second-half substitute in last season's FA Cup fourth-round tie, playing the last 12 minutes. With only 34 club appearances to his name to date, he could have a breakout international tournament in Germany.
Declan Rice (West Ham)- Saturday, July 16, 2022
Rice played the second half of a 1-1 draw in pre-season last season between the Royals and the Hammers.
Adam Wharton- N/A
FORWARDS
Jude Bellingham (Birmingham City)- Saturday, March 7, 2020
The final game before the pandemic-enforced break, Reading turned a deficit into a lead at St Andrew’s, beating Bellingham’s Blues 3-1 in the Second City.
Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)- Saturday, July 16, 2022
Alongside Rice, Bowen's last appearance against Reading came in pre-season as the Hammers drew 1-1 in blazing sunshine. Nikola Vlasic headed Bowen's cross past Joe Lumley while Yakou Meite equalised for the hosts.
Eberechi Eze (Queen's Park Rangers)- Thursday, December 26, 2019
Back in 2019/20, Reading and QPR fans were constantly hyping up attacking midfielders Ovie Ejaria and Eze, comparing who's best. Eze lost on his last battle with the Royals, John Swift scoring a winner on Boxing Day, but it is fair to say that the 25-year-old has won the war, with Ejaria currently a free agent after his release.
Phil Foden- N/A
Anthony Gordon- N/A
Jack Grealish (Aston Villa)- Saturday, August 25, 2018
A last-gasp Sam Baldock penalty rescued a point for Paul Clement’s Reading at Villa Park. Grealish, one of the most expensive players of all time, was pulling the strings behind Jonathan Kodjia in the Second City.
Harry Kane (Millwall)- Saturday, March 2, 2012
The England captain was on loan with the Lions as the Royals rampaged to the title in 2012. Falling behind at the Den, Hal Robson-Kanu and Adam Le Fondre turned the game on its head.
James Maddison (Norwich City)- Saturday, September 30, 2017
It took Maddison just 10 minutes to score at the Madejski Stadium in 2017. Curling a free kick into the back of the net and setting the Canaries on their way to promotion.
Cole Palmer- N/A
Bukayo Saka (Arsenal Under-18s)- Sunday, September 23, 2017
Having never played Reading in a full fixture, he played 80 minutes as Arsenal Under-18s thrashed the Royals 4-0.
Ivan Toney (Brentford)- Wednesday, February 10, 2021
Striker Toney scored twice and assisted another in a comprehensive 3-1 victory for the Bees at the SCL Stadium three years ago. Thomas Frank's side, unbeaten in 21, would go up to the Premier League and have remained there.
Ollie Watkins (Brentford)- Tuesday, June 30, 2020
Brentford thrashed Reading 3-0 at the SCL Stadium upon the restarting of the Championship during Covid-19. Not scoring on the night, he was part of the feared 'BMW' with teammates Saied Benrahma and Bryan Mbeumo.
