Portsmouth v Reading FC at Fratton Park: Where are they now?

Back in August 2011, Royals legend Dave Kitson scored the winning goal for Pompey as Reading looked to bounce back from a play-off defeat the season before.

Little did supporters know that come May, Reading would be champions while Portsmouth would be in League One.

13 years later and it looks as though the hosts are champions elect, while it is Reading fighting relegation, only this time in the third tier.

Adam Federici- Retired

Aussie Federici spent a decade playing for Reading- making almost 250 appearances between 2005 and 2015.

One of the best keepers in the Championship from 2008/09 until winning the title, and Golden Glove, in 2011/12.

He lost his place to future England international Alex McCarthy while in the Premier League, playing 26 times in the 2012/13 campaign, but regained it for his final campaign in 2015.

A great servant, unfortunately, his overriding memory will be a spill in the FA Cup semi-final toward the end of his final season as a Royal.

Playing 31 times for Bournemouth and Stoke City after departing Berkshire, he retired in 2021 after a season with Macarthur in his homeland.

Andy Griffin- Retired

An experienced Premier League performer before joining Reading, initially on loan in 2010, his consistent performances brought him plenty of praise.

The former Stoke and Newcastle full-back lost his place to Shaun Cummings the following season but still earned a medal with nine appearances.

Leaving in 2012 with 72 appearances to his name, Griffin departed the professional game after a season with Doncaster Rovers.

He is now a coach at a football college in the Midlands.

Alex Pearce- AFC Wimbledon

An Academy graduate who made his breakthrough under Brendan Rodgers, and even made club captain at the age of 21, the Republic of Ireland international really made his name under Brian McDermott.

Playing in every match of the 2011/12 Championship-winning season, the defender won Player of the Season that campaign.

Remaining in the squad for nine seasons and making nearly 250 appearances, he joined Derby County in 2015, remaining a Championship player until 2022 with Bristol City and Millwall.

Now 35, Pearce is still playing in League Two for AFC Wimbledon, playing 15 times for the Wombles this campaign.

Bongani Khumalo- Retired

A regular in South Africa for SuperSport United, the South Africa joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2011.

Failing to make a Spurs appearance, the defender had five loan spells away from White Hart Lane, including a four-match spell in Berkshire.

Kaspars Gorkss rendered the defender surplus to requirements but spells with PAOK, Doncaster Rovers and Colchester United followed.

Returning to South Africa in 2015, he retired in 2018.

Ian Harte- Agent

A legend of the British game after almost 300 appearances for Leeds United in the 1990s and early 2000s, the Republic of Ireland favourite departed after the club's financial demise.

Spending time in Spain with Levante, before returning with Sunderland and Blackpool, he caught McDermott's eye while playing in League Two for Carlisle United.

Despite being 32, the left-back had netted 18 goals for the Cumbrians, prompting Reading to part with £100,000 and take him down south.

100 appearances later and with a Championship title under his belt, the veteran departed a club icon.

Playing until 2015, not long before his 40th birthday, Harte is now a football agent.

Jimmy Kebe- Poker

Picked up under Coppell in 2008, it took some time to bed in but under McDermott the winger flourished.

Playing almost 200 times for the club, Kebe was a true maverick in Berkshire with a wicked delivery from wide.

Ian Holloway kept him in the Premier League with Crystal Palace in 2013/14, but he only featured six times.

Struggling to regain any sort of the form he had in RG2, the 39-year-old retired in 2015 and now plays professional poker.

Jem Karacan- Retired

A popular Academy graduate, Karacan played 175 times in seven years with the first team despite suffering long-term injuries towards the end.

Moving to Turkish giants Galatasaray in 2015, he made just six appearances and returned to England in 2016 with Bolton Wanderers.

Spells with Millwall, Central Coast Mariners and Scunthorpe United followed before a drop down to non-league Radcliffe.

Retiring in 2023, the former midfielder has since had a spell as a scout with Millwall.

Mikele Leigertwood- Reading coach

A popular midfielder full of hustle and bustle, the Antigua international had been a solid Championship performer with the likes of Crystal Palace and QPR before his loan switch in 2011.

Impressing during a half-season temporary move, this was made permanent in the summer and he would become a mainstay for three years.

Scoring THE goal to get the club promoted to the Premier League in 2012, he was released in 2014 but struggled with injury and retired officially in 2015.

Originally returning in 2016 as the Academy Loans Manager, he now coaches the Under-18s side.

Jobi McAnuff- Pundit

Club captain during a golden era for Reading, McAnuff arrived in 2009 as an experienced winger for the likes of Wimbledon, Crystal Palace and Watford.

Spending five years in RG2, the skipper made over 200 appearances for the Royals before departing at the end of his contract in 2014.

Playing into his 40s, he is similarly loved at Leyton Orient after two spells and helping the club back into the Football League before retiring in 2021.

Winning the Sir Tom Finney award for his impact in the EFL, the former winger is now a respected expert on Sky Sports.

Noel Hunt- Reading coach

Joining brother Stephen at Reading in 2008, Noel was a popular figure in five years as a Royal.

With an incredible leap for someone of 5ft8in, the Ireland international failed to replicate his 162-game Reading spell anywhere else after his 2013 exit.

Taking in time at the likes of Leeds United and Wigan Athletic, he turned to coaching in 2018 with Swindon Town, Salford City and Doncaster Rovers.

Returning to Reading in 2022, he is the Under-21 manager and had a five-match interim spell as first-team boss last season after Paul Ince's sacking.

Mathieu Manset- Retired

A bit of a cult favourite in Berkshire, the French striker was signed from Hereford in 2011 and the forward scored a late brace on debut to rescue a 2-2 draw with Millwall on the opening day.

Scoring another late winner against Bristol City in another comeback, the former Le Havre striker scored five goals in 28 appearances during his sole season.

Having since taken in spells in countries like Switzerland, China and Bulgaria, Manset returned to Reading in 2022 for the 150th-anniversary legends match.
