Reading boss Ruben Selles has confirmed that the club are in discussions with the EFL regarding the possibilities for any incomings this month.

The Royals, under embargo until 2025, have only been able to sign free agents or loan players since 2021.

Previously stating that he did not expect to many any additions during this window, which slams shut in nine days, things may have changed following interest in their players.

Tom Holmes joined Premier League Luton Town for a six-figure fee last week, but was loaned back until the end of the season, while the expectation is that fellow defender Nelson Abbey departs in the coming days.

Interest has been shown in the likes of Charlie Savage, Tom McIntyre and Sam Smith, with Selles and Director of Football Operations Mark Bowen working hard to try and keep the squad together.

Speaking on Thursday, Selles said: "We are working on it. We are working with the EFL to see what our current status is and what we can do. As soon as we get a proper answer, we will start to work on it. We have already started on plans, but we cannot make one step without the EFL giving us the thumbs up."

A fee of up to £500,000 was agreed for Holmes, with the defender set to end a 15-year association with the club in June when he moves to Kenilworth Road.

Supporters had feared that the club would see little of that fee and the owner Dai Yongge would hold it, but Bowen believes it is set to remain within the club accounts.

"My understanding is that player sales, and the ones that have been agreed, were done to make sure funding was in place for this month."

Wages and tax payments, always a worrying time as the club have paid these late on multiple occasions, are yet to be put aside for January.
