Former Reading forward Sam Baldock has retired from professional football due to injuries, and takes up an off-field role with Oxford United.

Making his name with MK Dons and Bristol City, his career took off with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Baldock was a big-money signing from newly-promoted Brighton back in 2018, but the Royals struggled during his three years with the club.

The 34-year-old scored 11 goals in 74 appearances for the club, released in the summer of 2021.

Struggling with injuries, he has scored six goals in 21 appearances for Derby County and Oxford United since his departure.

He will continue to play a role at the his boyhood club, having accepted a newly created position of Business Development Analyst.

“In the end it was kind of an easy decision because the injuries had just become too much," he told Oxford United Football Club. "I did all that I could to get fit and the medical team at Oxford have been incredible. I got so close to a return in January and then had another setback. This summer was tough, wondering whether I might have another season within me but, in the end, that gamble was not fair on anyone, including the club and my family who have been so supportive while I worked out what to do.

“It’s the right time to retire. I'm pleased with the career that I've had, and I have met some great people."
