He played in every league match of the 2011/12 Championship campaign and was named both the club's Player of the Season and included in the PFA Team of the Season.

The Republic of Ireland international even chipped in with five goals from centre-back, his career-best to date.

Now 34, Pearce looked back on his time with the club with great fondness.

“The night we got promoted at Madejski Stadium was my favourite memory at Reading," he said. "We played Nottingham Forest and won 1-0 - I cleared one off the line in the last minute which no one remembers. Everyone remembers Mikele Legerwood's goal, but no one seems to remember my clearance off the line, that's the life of a defender, unfortunately. That night for me, getting promoted to the Premier League is my personal best highlight."

However, the stalwart was also given a special moment in his final campaign as a Royal, leading the team out at Wembley Stadium for the club's first FA Cup semi-final appearance for over 80 years against Arsenal.

Losing 2-1 after extra-time, the defender still beams with pride at the experience.

“Close behind that was leading the team out in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Arsenal, that was special. That was a great day for my family, and for myself.”
