Former Reading captain Ady Williams has admitted he is not 'anti-Ruben Selles' after the former Southampton boss was appointed this morning.

Playing almost 400 times for his boyhood club, Williams has worked on the Royals' BBC Berkshire coverage for over a decade.

Selles, after a fortnight of waiting, had his visa approved on Thursday and has been formally announced as Paul Ince's replacement.

With only 15 matches of managerial experience, in which he won two matches and the Saints were relegated, the jury is still out on the 40-year-old Spaniard's impact.

Speaking on the Andrew Peach breakfast show, Williams gave his verdict on the appointment, and the week in general.

"It’s been a good week," he said. "The embargo’s been lifted, the academy got category one status- which is massive news for Michael Gilkes and his staff- we signed Harvey Knibbs yesterday, a striker from Cambridge United on a three-year deal and now Ruben Selles has officially been appointed manager. We wish him well.

"His record at Southampton, that’s the problem isn’t it. I think he’s got a poor record, 15 games and a couple of victories. It’s a difficult one, he’s a young man and hungry- I like that. I like that he’s a young fella, he’s a decent coach and he’s got his pro license. He’s worked around youngsters before, I think that will please Michael Gilkes and the academy staff. We wish him well- who knows? Veljko Paunovic came over and I was saying ‘who the hell’s Veljko Paunovic’ and we won our first seven or eight games."

Summing up, the former Wales international added: "I’m not anti- Ruben Selles at all, I think in the past three or four years we’ve had to Google these managers for where they have come from and what have they done in the game, at least Selles knows English football and the top level, albeit it wasn’t successful time for Southampton or Ruben Selles."
