Cheltenham Town are 'close' to resigning former Reading goalkeeper, Luke Southwood, according to reports.

The 25-year-old played in each of the Robins' 46 League One fixtures last season while on loan from Berkshire.

Released by the Royals last month, the Northern Ireland international was not short of interest after picking up 16 clean sheets.

A regular for a spell under Veljko Paunovic, leaving with 30 first-team appearances to his name after eight years.

Reading are left with Dean Bouzanis as a senior keeper, while youngsters Coniah Boyce-Clark, Jokull Andresson and Harvey Collins battle out for the number two slot.

However, it is now thought that the stopper has chosen to return to Gloucestershire.

Jon Palmer, of GloucestershireLive, says: "Cheltenham Town are hoping to finalise a deal for goalkeeper Luke Southwood" and a 'medical likely booked in for Monday [today].'

He would become Wade Elliott's fourth signing of the season.
