Former Reading captain Phil Parkinson has called for the club look at the likes of Coventry City and Luton Town as off-field uncertainty surrounds the club.
'Parky' played over 400 times for the Royals in the 1990s and early 2000s, before going on to have a successful managerial career with the likes of Colchester United, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers.
Now in charge of 'Hollywood' outfit Wrexham, leading them back into the Football League last season, the 55-year-old was talking with his former teammate Ady Williams on BBC Berkshire.
"Look at the club’s that do well: Luton and Coventry, Luton in particular- solid ownership behind the scenes, a well-run football club and ended up in the Premier League. Football isn’t a flash-in-the-pan scenario. You’ve got to build foundations to go forward," he said on the podcast.
"Reading were famed for that if you go back to the era of when we were there and later on when Steve [Coppell] got them into the Premier League. People used to talk about Reading and look at Reading how they look at Luton now. That’s what Reading have got to get back to now. I haven’t got great knowledge of what’s going on behind-the-scenes but that’s what Reading was known for, being a solid, community club. That’s what they’ve got to build back to. They’ve got a great fanbase here and hopefully they can get back at the first time of asking."
