Reading are 'keen' on former Everton defender Matthew Pennington, according to reports.

The 28-year-old centre-back spent over a decade on the books at Goodison Park, featuring nine times for the Toffees in five years.

Having seven loan spells away from the Premier League, the Warrington-born defender joined Shrewsbury Town permanently in 2021 after a loan spell at New Meadow.

Scoring six times in 32 appearances for Salop last season, he is out of contract next month.

According to Darren Witcoop, of the Sunday Mirror, the Royals are one of multiple clubs looking at the out-of-contract star.

"Plymouth are considering a move for out-of-contract Shrewsbury defender Matthew Pennington as they look to bolster their squad. Portsmouth remain favourites to sign Pennington with League One clubs including Reading also keen," Witcoop said on Twitter.

Losing Naby Sarr to Qatar last night, Reading could be in need of defensive cover.

However, the club are still without a first-team manager since Paul Ince's sacking over 60 days ago.
