Four former Reading players have been released by League One rivals ahead of the new season.

12 first-team players have departed Berkshire so far, including big names like Lucas Joao and Shane Long.

Take a look below at the four former Royals players released.

Stuart Moore

Never officially making a first-team debut for Reading, Moore spent six years with the club between 2011 and 2017.

Having seven loan spells in this time, he moved to Barrow in 2017 and played 18 times in his only season.

Since then, the 28-year-old has played just 27 times for five different clubs.

Blackpool let him go this month after spending some time on loan at Doncaster Rovers.

Anssi Jakkola

A vastly-experienced keeper, the 36-year-old joined Reading in 2016 under Jaap Stam from Ajax Cape Town.

At Reading for three years, he was largely second or third choice and made 30 appearances.

In four years with Bristol Rovers, the Finland international has made over 60 appearances.

Not being kept on in a playing capacity, he has been offered a deal on the coaching staff under Joey Barton at the Memorial Ground.

Lynford Sackey

From one end of a career to the other, 20-year-old Sackey left Reading in 2022 with two cup appearances to his name.

Linking up with Bolton Wanderers' 'B' Team, the full-back failed to break into the first-team in Lancashire and departs on the search for more minutes.

Sam Smith

The biggest name out there, Smith has hit 35 goals over the last two seasons for Cambridge United.

Spending seven years in the youth ranks, Smith scored two goals in 11 first team appearances for the Royals during 2017/18.

After five loan spells, Smith made the permanent switch to Abbey Stadium in 2021 and hit the ground running.

Now a free agent, the 25-year-old is hot property in the third tier.
