Reading legend Shane Long has departed the club for a second time.

The 36-year-old was a star player from 2005 until 2011, making over 200 appearances and scoring crucial goals in successful sides.

Going on to spend a decade in the Premier League with the likes of Southampton and West Brom, the Irishman returned to Berkshire last summer.

Scoring twice, once in the Championship and once in the FA Cup, the veteran was a regular under Paul Ince and former teammate Noel Hunt.

However, relegation to League One has been cofirmed and the club have included Long in one of the six first-team players released.

Lucas Joao and Scott Dann are among the group who will be continuing their careers elsewhere.

Turning 37 during next season, Long has hinted at a possible retirement over the summer.

"I’m going to spend some time with my family now, but I think enough might be enough – I’m going to be 37 next January," he told BBC Berkshire. "I’ll spend some time with my family over the summer and weigh up the pros and cons in terms of calling it a day."
