Reading's 10-year stint in the Championship has come to an end after relegation, with the Royals to line-up in the third tier for the first time since 2002 from next season.

From play-off battles to relegation dog-fights, it's been an eventful decade which has been marred by financial irregularity and heartache.

But, it wasn't all bad! Let's delve back and look at some of the best Royals matches from the Championship.

2013/14: Reading 7-1 Bolton Wanderers

The expectation was to bounce straight back to the Premier League under Nigel Adkins, but a shaky spell over the festive period moved the Royals out of the top 10 and fighting for a play-off spot.

With just one win in six, struggling Bolton arrived at the Madejski Stadium on a good run of one defeat in six.

Adam Le Fondre scored within 12 minutes and the result was in no doubt, with 'Alfie' grabbing a hattrick in the first half.

Pavel Pogrebnyak, Kaspars Gorkss, Nick Blackman and Hope Akpan added to the rout- moving the side back into the top six.

10 days later Le Fondre grabbed another treble as Blackpool was eased aside 5-1.

2014/15: Reading 3-3 Wolves

A struggle of a season from start to finish, supporters were treated to a goalfest in the summer sunshine.

Newly promoted Wolves packed out the South Stand, but had to wait until the second half to see their goals.

Michael Hector scored his first goal for the club to put the hosts in front at the break, before three goals in 10 minutes made it 2-2 early in the second half.

Nick Blackman's own goal looked to have snatched it for the Wolves, but Glenn Murray smacked home in the last minute to salvage a point.

2015/16: Reading 5-1 Ipswich Town

For three months at the start of the season, it looked like Steve Clarke had cracked the Championship code.

Beating the likes of Burnley and Middlesbrough to move into the automatic places, everything unravelled after a 4-2 demolition at Fulham.

For the best game, we've gone for a five star performance under the lights against Ipswich Town.

Orlando Sa was truly magic, grabbing a hattrick, before Blackman and an Ollie Norwood thunderbolt set the seal on a cracking Friday night's action.

2016/17: Aston Villa 1-3 Reading

The only real season where it was hard to pick a game, perhaps controversially we have not picked the Fulham play-off second leg.

Going to a giant such as Villa, off the back of a 7-1 thumping at Norwich, and playing them off the park...it's what dreams are made of.

When you then throw in a brace from unknown Joseph Mendes, it has all the makings of a special away day.

Mendes and Lewis Grabban did the damage in front of a packed out away end for what is the club's only win at Villa Park to date.

2017/18: Reading 1-0 QPR

Paul Clement's first match in charge was probably his high-point, an action-packed win over the R's.

Sone Aluko scored a worldie early on and Reading seemed to be hanging on for an eternity- down to 10 men for some of the game- before Dave Edwards conceded a stoppage time penalty.

Up stepped Jake Bidwell, and Vito Mannone powered his shot away to send most of the 20,000 in attendance into raptures.

2018/19: Ipswich Town 1-2 Reading

Another year, another relegation fight.

Over 2,000 Royals travelled to bottom club Ipswich for a proverbial 'must-win.'

Norwich loanee Nelson Oliviera enjoyed opening the scoring at Portman Road, but Gwion Edwards looked to have snatched a late equaliser for the Tractor Boys.

However, Yakou Meite fed Mo Barrow and the winger slotted under Bartosz Bialkowski to earn a dramatic win and move Jose Gomes' side away from relegation danger.

2019/20: Birmingham City 1-3 Reading

With the news of Covid-19 increasing, the trip to St Andrew's had a feeling of a last-hurrah for the near 2,000 in attendance.

Not starting well, conceding to Scott Hogan inside six minutes, three second half goals turned the game on its head as the Royals picked up a second successive win.

Finishing in a respectable 14th under Mark Bowen, little did we know in March that it would be over 18 months before we would see a full stadium again.

2020/21: Reading 2-0 Nottingham Forest

A surreal season mostly behind-close-doors, Reading won seven of their first eight matches to lead the way under Veljko Paunovic.

As the pandemic looked to ease, 2,000 lucky supporters were let back into the Madejski Stadium in December for the first time in nine months.

The Reds went down to 10 men while Lucas Joao and Michael Morrison did the damage in front of goal.

Another 2,000 were in the week after for a defeat to Birmingham City, before the gates were slammed shut again until August 2021.

2021/22: Reading 4-4 Swansea City

With honourable mentions to Fulahm and Sheffield United, how often do you see a 4-4 draw?!

Taking the lead inside three minutes, the Swans were 4-1 up by the hour mark and cruising.

Tom Ince, Joao and Tom McIntyre turned the game back in Reading's favour- the Academy graduate scoring his second stoppage time goal of the week to earn four valuable points.

2022/23: Millwall 0-1 Reading

The high-point of the season came in the sixth game as the Royals topped the table.

Naby Sarr, on debut, headed home while Jeff Hendrick and Shane Long both missed one-on-one chances to put more daylight between themselves and the Lions.
