Reading have been relegated to League One for the first time in 20 years after Huddersfield Town's 1-0 win over Sheffield United.
A season with a transfer embargo and six-points deducted has been compounded by a run of 12 matches without a win and just three away wins all season.
Last in the third tier in 2002, the Royals will join Blackpool and Wigan Athletic for the 2023/24 campaign.
Noel Hunt replaced Paul Ince last month, and is yet to win any of his four matches.
With one match remaining, away to Huddersfield on Monday, it is the clubs first relegation of any kind for a decade.
They will be playing the likes of Oxford United, Portsmouth and Shrewsbury Town in the third tier- and some clubs for the first time ever.
