Former Reading star Fran Kirby has revealed she will miss the Women's World Cup with a knee injury.

Born and bred in the town, the goal-scoring midfielder began her career with the Royals and played nearly 50 times before making a move to giants Chelsea in 2015 for a then British record fee.

Going on to play over 100 times for Emma Hayes' side, she's won four WSL titles and a key member of the England team to finish third at the 2015 World Cup and win the 2022 European Championships.

With over 60 caps, she is one of the more experienced heads in the side, but has confirmed she will not be back fit in time to make Sarina Weigman's World Cup squad.

Announcing the news on her social media, she said: "Unfortunately after a few months of rehab the decision has been made that I will require surgery on my knee. I have been trying my best to not undergo this but unfortunately my progress has been limited due to the issue in my knee.

"I'm absolutely gutted to announce that as this means my season is over and I will not be able to make the World Cup in the summer."

The 29-year-old hopes to be back in time for the beginning of next season.

Leah Williamson, captain of the Lionesses last summer, is already a major World Cup doubt with an ACL injury, as is defender Millie Bright.
