On this day in 2002, Reading drew a third consecutive home match in a nerve-jangling promotion run-in.

Unbeaten in over a month, more than 15,000 turned out to see Alan Pardew's men host play-off chasing Oldham Athletic.

John Mackie headed the hosts into the lead before Lee Duxbury equalised just before half-time.

Legendary captain Phil Parkinson restored the lead immediately after the break, but the elusive home win evaded the Royals again as Allan Smart levelled the scores with 15 minutes remaining.

Reading would not win again for the rest of the season, drawing an incredible nine out of the final 11 matches.

Looking to be cruising to promotion, it came down to a final day shoot-out with Brentford...and the rest is history.

The Latics would reach the play-offs, but have been unable to return to the top two divisions since 1997 and now play in the National League.

In contrast, the Royals have not been out of the top two divisions since winning promotion at Griffin Park in 2002.
