Wigan Athletic have been docked three points for failing to pay their players for March 2023.

Repeat offenders, the Latics did so in June 2022, July 2022 and October 2022- meaning they had to enter into an agreement with the EFL.

By failing to pay up this month, an automatic deduction was triggered and has now been put into action.

Breaching this agreement further, the club owner has failed to deposit 125 per cent of the forecasted wage budget into a designated account- another offence.

According to the EFL statement, "The Club’s owner will also be charged with misconduct, with the matter to be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission."

This will put Shaun Maloney's side onto 31 points, eight points adrift of the current safety mark.

Coming in a crucial week, the Royals are still waiting to hear on their points deduction, which could move Paul Ince's men down to 38 points and in 21st position.

Wigan visit the SCL Stadium on the final home match of the season, April 22.
