In a difficult summer with 12 outgoings, Paul Ince took eight out-of-contract players to St George's Park for pre-season training.

Another three were also looked at in the course of friendlies back in Berkshire.

Of the 12, the Royals only signed two- while only three others are playing at a standard equivalent to, or higher than, the Championship.

Reading Chronicle:

Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill- Puskas Akademia

A former Swindon Town full-back, the 27-year-old left Dutch side Excelsior in summer 2022 and joined the Royals for pre-season ahead of the campaign.

Getting injured while at St George's Park, Ormonde-Ottewill did not feature in the friendly against Benfica and was shortly told he could move on.

In September he signed a one-year deal with Hungarian top-flight outfit Puskas Akademia, where he has played 13 times.

Julian Jeanvier- Auxerre

A figure known to British fans for his time with Brentford, the 30-year-old centre-back impressed the supporters against Benfica, but was not offered a deal.

Embarking on a trial with Ligue 1 side Auxerre, the Guinea international signed a one-year contract, which the option of a second year.

Playing 18 times for the struggling side, he is playing at a good standard.

Massimo Luongo- Ipswich Town

A second tier regular with Sheffield Wednesday and Queens Park Rangers, the Australia international spent time at Bearwood but did not attend the pre-season camp.

Joining Middlesbrough instead, the former Swindon Town favourite struggled with injuries and failed to make an appearance.

Joining League One promotion challengers Ipswich Town in January, he has played four times so far for the Tractor Boys.

Jacob Davenport- Stockport County

Spending pre-season with Reading after his Blackburn Rovers release, the midfielder did not make the grade, and had a similar fate at Hearts.

Joining Lincoln City in September, he never played in the league and joined fourth tier Stockport County in February, where he has already made four appearances.

Still only 24, the Manchester City youngster has time on his side.

Jodi Jones- Notts County

A winger who impressed many during his six years with Coventry City, an ACL injury hampered his promising rise and he was released in 2022.

Reading chose not to take him on in 2022, so the 25-year-old joined Oxford United instead.

After making just eight appearances, he was loaned out to National League high-liers Notts County.

Josh Murphy- Oxford United

A teenage sensation with Norwich City, along with twin Jacob, the 28-year-old is vastly experienced with the likes of Cardiff City and Preston North End.

After ending the trial with the Royals, Murphy signed a two-year-deal with Thames Valley rivals Oxford United.

The winger has 15 appearances to his name this season.

Grant Ward- Bristol Rovers

A Tottenham Hotspur youngster, Ward made his name with the likes of Ipswich Town and Blackpool.

Failing to impres at Reading, Blackpool took Ward back on trial, offering him a three-month contract.

Appearing twice, he was not kept on and signed for League One Bristol Rovers in January.

Connor Wickham- Cardiff City

Part of the Academy set-up in Berkshire during the early 2000s, the forward was constantly linked when scoring goals for the likes of Ipswich Town and Sunderland.

Slowly dropping down the pyramid, he scored goals in pre-season but was not kept on and joined third tier Forest Green Rovers.

Netting nine times in 20 appearances for FGR, struggling Cardiff picked him up in January, where he is yet to score.

Yasin Ben El-Mhanni- Arbroath

A former non-league starlet, he came to prominence after being signed by Newcastle United and former England star Peter Beardsley was found guilty of using discriminatory language toward the winger.

Continuing his career in non-league, he was looked at in pre-season fixtures with West Ham and Brighton before being let go.

Now with Scottish Championship side Arbroath, the 27-year-old has scored twice and notched two assists in seven league appearances.

Sam Hutchinson and Nesta Guinness-Walker- Reading

The only two signed on permanently, both have fou dminutes hard to come by, injury related for Hutchinson while Guinness-Walker has competed with Baba Rahman for a starting spot.

At opposite ends of their careers- Hutchinson a 33-year-old with over 300 appearances compared with 22-year-old Guinness-Walker- both will be eyeing up the proposition of remaining in Berkshire beyond this summer.
