Reading star Tom Holmes surprised the interviewer during a podcast appearance when choosing the 1988 Simod Cup as the historic match to watch if he owned a time machine.

One of the club's biggest day, over 40,000 Royals made the journey to Wembley, the first time in the club's history, to witness Ian Branfoot's men smash Luton Town 4-1.

Martin Hicks lifted the club's only domestic trophy, although relegation meant the side could not defend their title.

Only in existence for seven years as a way of filling time left during the European football ban, Reading were the only second tier side to ever win it.

Taking part in an interview for his agency, Midas Sports, the current vice-captain said: "It would have to be the Simod Cup. It’s the only trophy we’ve ever won, other than the titles. It was only an official tournament for five or so years but we won in ’88, so yeah that’s the only silverware we’ve won. It was played at Wembley, and we won."

The boyhood Reading fan has gone on to make over 100 professional appearance for the club and was appointed vice-captain over the summer at the age of just 22.
