Reading's 2-1 victory over Rotherham United saw plenty of drama on the field, with Tyrese Fornah netting a stoppage time winner after the team fell behind in the first half, but less than usual off-field.

A crowd of just 9,492 turned out on Valentine's Day evening to witness the Royals pick up a first victory of 2023, the lowest league turnout since 2018.

No more than a couple of hundred made the long trip down from Yorkshire, which never helps the total attendance, but only 9,000 Reading fans came out on a chilly Tuesday.

With just four wins in 19 matches previously, twinned with the match falling on Valentine's Day and the availablility on Sky, made it an unappealing prospect for many.

The lowest league turnout since returning to the Championship in 2013 was against Sheffield United in 2018- with just 6,769 braving the snowy conditions at the-then Madejski Stadium.

8,631 turned up a few weeks later as Adam Le Fondre scored, for Bolton, in a 1-1 draw against Jaap Stam's struggling side.

Last season saw two matches with a crowd of under 10,000- 9,611 saw a 2-0 defeat to Luton Town while 9,928 saw a 2-1 win over Stoke City.

The total average so far, with seven home matches remaining, is 12,593- 300 less than last season's total.
