Reading conceded late on to lose 1-0 against Sunderland.

Here is every word from Paul Ince.

Ince on the match

He made a couple of saves, Joe and a couple went over the bar but you expect that. You get the killer punch in the 85th minute and you lose a game you shouldn’t lose.

The first half we nullified them, you could sense it in the fans. Great support Sunderland have got and we knew it was going to be tough, but we had to quieten the fans and in the first half we did that. We had three or four opportunities where if we were more precise in our transition we would have opened them up. Coming in at half-time half our job was done, so it was more of the same. Every time the ball went into their box they were uncomfortable. Of course, they will have one or two chances. You think you’ve ridden the worst and then you make a mistake and that’s how they win the game- there’s nothing else to say.

Ince on Baba mistake

You can’t do anything about it. It’s an individual mistake but we are one. Baba is devastated in there which shows that he cares but I said we made a mistake, you didn’t, because we’re a team. You can coach them until the cows come home, if you make an individual mistake you can’t coach that. That’s life. He devastated and it hurts him. He feels like he has let us down, which he hasn’t. It’s never easy when you make individual mistakes because it doesn’t matter what I say with a six-and-a-half-hour journey home to Reading. I’ve been there- I missed a penalty at a World Cup. Get it out of your system and we go again on Tuesday.

Ince on result

I am pleased to come here and play the way we did. We’re talking about a Sunderland team with some really nice technicians. We kept them relatively quiet. There’s a long way to go. Home form is good but our away form has been not so great. To come here and put in the performance we did has to give you some positivity. Our home form is good and that’s where we need to pick up our points. After today we have some games where we can pick up some points. Nothing has really changed in the table; we are where we are. No point being doom and gloom, it’s tough to lose. It took the players seven hours to get here on the coach, that’s a long time. I’m really pleased with the boys attitude, especially in front of the tough crowd. We refresh, move forward and go into Rotherham.

Ince on Tom McIntyre

With Mama being out for two games we haven’t got a natural six. We saw him last year against Sheffield United and he coped well. I thought today he did very well. He’s one of those players who can play numerous positions and I was pleased with how he played.

Ince on Shane Long

You’re talking about someone who’s 36 trying to play game after game. That’s where we are with Shane. He gives us so much for someone who’s at such an age. It’s tough to keep playing game after game. Lucas was out and we were fortunate to bring Yakou Meite on for 15 minutes, but this is where we are.

Ince on Liam Moore

He got 45 minutes so hopefully. We need to see when we get back down south
