Reading make the relatively short hop to the Second City tomorrow evening to face mid-table Birmingham City.

Here are five players to have starred for both in the last 20 years.

Matthew Upson

A future England international, Upson spent three months in Berkshire on loan in the early stages of his career.

Playing 14 times, and scoring his first professional goal, impressed supporters and the footballing world alike, with Birmingham picking up the defender in January 2003.

He spent almost four years at St Andrew's, making over 100 appearances and earning the Blues almost double their money when West Ham paid a reported £7.5m for Upson in 2007.

Making his England debut while with Birmingham, he won 21 caps in total and had a Premier League career lasting until 2013, with another small spell with Leicester City in 2015.

Hayden Mullins

Berkshire-born Mullins joined the Crystal Palace academy and made more than 250 appearances for the Eagles in six seasons.

West Ham paid over £500,000 for the midfielder in 2003 and he played another 213 times for the Hammers.

He joined Portsmouth in 2009, starting in the 2010 FA Cup final.

Making a temporary switch back 'home', the Reading-born star played seven times for the Royals to help Brian McDermott's side win the Championship in 2012.

Not signing permanently, he joined Birmingham City in 2012 on a free transfer, playing 39 times over the next two campaigns.

He retired in 2015 with Notts County, becoming a manager with Watford and most recently Colchester United until January 2022.

Reading Chronicle:

Stephen Kelly

An Academy graduate with Tottenham, he played almost 40 times for the North London club before Birmingham paid a reported £750,000 for the full-back.

Instrumental as the Blues won promotion to the top-flight, he played every minute of the 2007/08 Premier League season.

Moving further south in 2009, he joined Fulham until 2013, signing for newly-promoted Reading in January.

Never truly displacing Chris Gunter from right-back, he appeared sporadically over two- and-a-half years before his departure in 2015 with 52 appearances.

Reading Chronicle:

Michael Morrison

A fan favourite with both sides, Morrison made his name with hometown club Cambrdige United.

A key component as Charlton Athletic won promotion back to the second tier in 2012, the 34-year-old established himself as one of the better centre-backs in the division.

Joining Blues in 2014, he played almost 200 times, many as captain, in a turbulent time during which they were repeatedly fighting for survival in the Championship.

After failing to agree a new deal in 2019, he moved to Reading on a free transfer.

A regular throughout his time, he played over 100 times in three seasons- again many as captain.

Moving on in the summer, he is still regularly playing at a high level, running out for Portsmouth in League One.

Scott Dann

Another centre-half, Dann made his name on the Midlands scene with Walsall and Coventry City before joining Birmingham in 2009.

A regular in two seasons with the Blues, he won the 2011 League Cup and almost helped keep them in the Premier League.

Moving to Blackburn Rovers, he became a solid top-flight performer and enjoyed eight years with Crystal Palace, many as captain.

The 35-year-old joined Reading in the summer, playing 18 times during an injury-hit spell.
