With over a third of the season gone, the Royals sit 11th with eight wins and eight defeats in 17 matches.
Battling through a transfer embargo and points deductions in recent seasons, the ambition was always to maintain Championship survival for most fans and manager Paul Ince.
According to the latest set of simulations by FiveThirtyEight, Reading are to finish 14th with 60 points, nine points clear of relegation danger and nine points outside the play-offs.
Burnley and Sheffield United are tipped for automatic promotion, while Norwich, Watford, QPR and Millwall make up the play-offs.
Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United and Hull City make up the bottom three.
Sitting top of the league after a win over Millwall in September, expectations have altered for some, but the majority are content with remaining in the second tier.
Speaking on ambitions on Thursday, Ince said he wants to get to the World Cup break before evaluating aims.
"We fight until November 12," he said. "See where we are, go away for some warm weather training and by then we should have Naby Sarr back, Liam Moore back training, Hutchinson will be next week, then you get to December 10 against Coventry with a stronger squad. We’ll see where we are November 12."
