On this day in 2018, Reading picked up their first home win of the season against Hull City.

After a year of struggle under Jaap Stam and Paul Clement in 2017/18, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach had the difficulty of putting a competitive squad together on a shoe-string budget after a large turnaround of players.

Starting slowly, the Royals lost their first three matches, netting just once, before back-to-back draws and a fourth defeat in seven had them rock-bottom of the Championship.

A much-needed win came after the September international break, coming out on top in a topsy-turvy encounter with Preston North End at Deepdale.

Back to reality in midweek against Norwich City, losing 2-1, the home fixture with Hull City was one earmarked as a potential point-winning game.

A perfect start, the game was only four minutes old when a Leandro Bacuna corner was palmed away by the Tigers keeper- straight into the path of Sam Baldock who bundled it over the line from close-range.

Todd Kane found the net for the Tigers in the first half, only for it to be ruled offside- as did Fraizer Campbell twice in the second half.

With 20 minutes to go, Jon-Dadi Bodvarsson slammed home a second following good play from Andy Yiadom and Mo Barrow, while Yiadom found the opposite corner 10 minutes later to set the seal on what former Reading boss, and then Hull City chief, Nigel Adkins call a 'terrible' performance.

The win lifted the Royals out of the relegation zone but Clement would lose his job by the time the year was out, being replaced by Jose Gomes.

A string of late wins would keep a misfit of Royals players in the Championship for another season.

Reading were never once higher than 19th, going down as one of the worst campaigns this century.
