Princess Diana, Princess of Wales

Perhaps the only passing of recent years that can reach anywhere like the levels experienced currently with Queen Elizabeth II, the country came to a standstill following the death of the much-loved former Princess of Wales.

She died on Sunday, August 31 1997 and the day's Premier League fixture involving Liverpool and Newcastle United was postponed.

Her funeral was to take place on Saturday, September 5 and so matches were moved to the Friday before or Sunday after.

The Royals lost 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, September 6 and an incredible 32 million tuned in to the service the day previous.

Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh

Elizabeth's II's husband of 74 years, the Duke of Ediburgh, passed away on Friday, April 9 2021.

That very day Reading were on television against Watford, with a full set of fixtures following the next day.

Before Veljko Paunovic's side lost at Vicarage Road- coincidentally who Paul Ince's team were supposed to be playing most recently after Her Majesty's death- a minute's silence was held for the small amount present.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was behind-closed-doors and therefore only the players, staff and officials were at the match in person.
