There was the first managerial change in the Championship of 2021 this week as the evergreen Mick McCarthy returned to England’s second tier.

Below Ben Waite rounds up all this week’s news from around the Championship including a wave of transfer activity.

Neil Harris and his staffing team were relieved of their duties at Cardiff City this week and McCarthy has taken over the reigns at the Welsh side.

On the transfer front, a host of incoming from overseas were confirmed in a mix of permanent and loan deals. Filip Krovinovic, who spent the first half of the season on loan with West Brom, has joined Nottingham Forest on a loan agreement from Benfica while Zach Clough departed Nottinghamshire to Wigan.

Dimitris Giannoulis arrived in Norwich from Greek side PAOK Salonika on an initial loan deal, with the defender becoming a permanent addition in the summer if the Canaries are promoted to the Premier League.

Another overseas addition arrives in South Wales with American forward Josh Morris signing with Swansea on loan from Seattle Sounders while Conor Hourihane made a little shorter loan trip linking up with the Swans from Aston Villa.

Sam Hutchinson re-joined Sheffield Wednesday after departing in the summer after a short spell in Cyprus with FC Pafos while fellow free agent and former Championship stalwart, Richard Keogh has linked up with Huddersfield after a spell with MK Dons.

Birmingham City welcomed Rekeem Harper on loan from neighbours West Brom while Maikel Kieftenbeld left the West Midlands for pastures new at Millwall. Jayden Reid also departed the Blues side for a loan spell up the road, with Walsall.

There was a familiar face back at Huddersfield as Duane Holmes returned to the side from Derby County in a permanent transfer while Millwall also had a familiar face with Kenneth Zohore extending his loan from West Brom until the end of the season in South London.

Alfie Doughty left the capital after departing Charlton Athletic for a Championship return with Stoke City while Rotherham welcomed back Jamie Proctor from his loan with Newport County.

On the outgoing front there has been a host of loans away from the Championship as players look for regular first team football as the plans of many clubs become clear.

Both Aramide Oteh and Connor Masterson depart QPR for Colchester United and Swindon Town respectively while Norwich’s Tyrese Omotoye also links up with the Robins.

Frank Vincent and Tyler Cordner have left Bournemouth in search of opportunities at Walsall and Southend respectively as Barnsley’s Luke Thomas departs to Ipswich Town all on loan deals.

In other loan deals, Robbie Cundy has gone from Bristol City to Gillingham, George Byers from Swansea to Portsmouth, Stephen Walker from Middlesbrough to Crewe along with Rotherham’s Billy Jones.

Preston trio Josh Harrop, Jayden Stockley and Ethan Walker all departed the Lilywhites on loan deals joining Ipswich, Charlton, and Carlisle respectively.

The highlight outgoing loan of the week falls to Brentford’s Halil Dervisoglu who on returning from a deal with FC Twente has now joined Turkish giants Galatasaray until the season climax.

On the permanent transfer front Mike te Wierik has ended his Derby nightmare by resigning with FC Groningen, the club he joined the Rams from last summer.

Bright Osayi-Samuel has now departed QPR after agreeing a deal with Fenerbahce to be advanced to this transfer window after initially agreeing a deal to join the Turkish side at the end of the current campaign.

Young Royals stopper, Jokull Andresson made his debut for Morecambe on an emergency week-long loan at the weekend as he kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 victory.
