Tonight Reading continue their Championship journey with a home game against near-neighbours Wycombe Wanderers.

Below we look at what you should know about the Chairboys ahead of the fixture.

Recent Background

Wycombe have enjoyed an incredible ride over the last 30 years.

A side with a proud history of semi-professional football, they won promotion to the Football League for the first time in 1993 under future Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill.

The club spent 22 of the next 24 seasons in League Two but are perhaps most famous for their run to the FA Cup Semi-Final in 2000/01 under former Royal Lawrie Sanchez.

They eventually lost to Liverpool in the last four at Villa Park, but was an incredible achievement for a side who had bought on a striker for a game against Leicester who they had found off of Teletext!

They spent much of the noughties in League Two, other than two single season spells in League One in 2009/10 and 2011/12.

Current boss Gareth Ainsworth took over in 2012 and had seen five seasons of fourth division football before he took them up to League One in 2017/18.

Since they reached the third tier they never looked back, consolidating for a season in 17th before miraculously finishing last season in 3rd, via points per game.

However this season has been a struggle, with five defeats from five and just one goal scored.

Key Players

A side which mainly remains unchanged from their League One and League Two days, it has a real blend of experienced professionals and youngsters looking to make their way in the game.

In goal they have the choice between: David Stockdale, a man who won promotion to the Premier League with Brighton in 2017 as their number one; Ryan Allsopp, who was their number one for much of their promotion winning season; or new signing Curtis Anderson, who was in goal for England’s Under-20 World Cup win in 2017.

Their defence is full of lower league experience, with the likes of Jack Grimmer, Joe Jacobson and Anthony Stewart playing over 930 games between them while new signings Andre Burley and Ryan Tafazolli add some fresh legs to the defensive options.

The midfield is packed full of lower league talent, namely Curtis Thompson and Chairboys stalwart Matt Bloomfield.

Out- wide Fred Onyedinma and Daryl Horgan offer pace and width, and both have regularly played at Championship level or higher with Millwall and Preston respectively.

Irishman Horgan played for his country for the first time in two years during the last international break.

Up front they have plenty of options with the likes of Alex Samuel, Scott Kashket, former Royal Uche Ikpeazu and ‘The Beast’ Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Kashket, the former Leyton Orient striker, scored the club’s first ever goal in the second tier of English football with the opening goal of the game against Millwall on Saturday.

Head-to-Head

The sides have met 12 times, with 8 Reading wins, 2 draws and 2 Wycombe wins.

The first meeting was back in 1976, a 2-1 Biscuitmen win at Loakes Park in the FA Cup.

Last season Reading faced Wycombe in the opening round of the League Cup.

Alex Samuel opened the scoring in the second half before summer signing George Puscas equalised shortly after.

Debutant Rafael Cabral shone in the shoot-out as he saved two spot-kicks, with youngster Danny Loader scoring the winning penalty in front of the packed away end.

Wycombe have failed to beat Reading in six attempts, last winning 5-3 in 1999.

Odds

According to Sky Bet, Reading are 4/9 for a win, Wycombe are 6/1 and a draw is 7/2, with all odds being correct at time of writing.
