The Reading Chronicle understands that Rodrigo Riquelme is currently staying in the Madjeski Stadium hotel, over two and a half weeks since the 20 year old first came to the Royals on trail.

The loan move seemed to be relying on the player signing a new contract with his parent club, Atlético Madrid, however the deal is understood to be close to completion.

Speaking to the Reading Chronicle after the 1-0 Carabao defeat to Luton on Tuesday night, Reading manager Veljko Paunović claimed that the move is “progressing. Unless there is a last minute change, we’re optimistic at this point”.

It is also understood that Paunović met with Riquelme and his agent today at the club hotel.

Riquelme is Spanish by origin and plays predominantly on the right wing, a position that Reading lack players in, for Atlético B.

The right footed winger is described to have a quick turn of pace, good ball control and a range of passing, he has also played on the left wing and as a second striker.

Last season Rodrigo played 21 games in the Segunda División B (the third tier of the Spanish football league) where he managed to score five goals, and make two assists.

He also played in the UEFA youth league for the Spanish giants 7 times, scoring two and assisting four goals.

This included a stand out performance against Rangers, leading to heavy interest in the trickster from the Gers and Celtic throughout 2020.

Having made one appearance in both LaLiga and Copa del Rey for the first team, Riquelme is seen as one of the top talents in Atlético’s academy.

Should he come on loan to the Royals, ‘Roro’ will look to build on his break through season for Atlético, and become a Championship star this season.

It is also understood that Reading have lined up a shock move for former loanee Pele.
