Reading FC boss Veljko Paunovic was left ruing his sides attacking display in the Carabao Cup defeat to Luton Town.

Speaking after the game, Paunovic admitted his frustration at the performance of his front players, who failed to impress in a toothless attacking display.

The manager said: "You have to finish with purpose and not shoot with no sense. This is what we lacked.

"I expected more from our attacking performance, from everyone. We had initiative and the control in the second half in terms of the percentages but we have to score goals and have numbers in the box. It's something we have to improve.

"We're trying to play with the way we want and we have to sharpen our capablities."

Paunovic did, however, insist that positives could be taken from the game - despite the defeat.

"Given the circumstances, we believe this was the right approach and I'm proud of the effort of the players and defended the crest.

"I think at this point it was very important that everyone is connected and engaged.

"We were close, we haven't been intimidated by our opponent. For me, we were better overall but we have to learn from our defeat."

The manager also confirmed that Ovie Ejaria should be fit for Saturday, despite hobbling off the pitch against Derby County on the opening day of the league season.

Speaking on the potential arrival of Rodrigo Riquelme, Paunovic confirmed that the club are hopeful of securing his signature, saying: "We are progressing. In the next couple of days - unless there is a last minute change - we are optimistic."
