Reading FC concluded their preparations for the return to Championship action with an impressive 3-1 victory over Portsmouth at the Madejski Stadium on Sunday.

Lucas Joao opened the scoring for Mark Bowen's side side after half an hour, reacting quickest after John Swift struck the cross bar with a powerful free kick - controlling and finishing well from inside the area.

Bowen's men doubled the lead before half-time. Omar Richards met an inviting cross at the near post and scored with a delicate glance.

Some hesitation between Rafael and Liam Moore allowed Portsmouth forward Oli Hawkins to round the goalkeeper and halve Reading's advantage early in the second half.

After an action-packed second half, Reading secured the triumph when Michael Olise latched onto a pull back from Timbe Masika before finishing well into the right hand corner.

Reading had been due to play Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend - however, this game was called off after Spurs' boss Jose Mourinho expressed concerns for the welfare of his players.

This came after two members of Reading FC staff tested positive in the latest round of testing.
