Royals boss Mark Bowen has admitted that Reading's financial situation will make it difficult to invest heavily in upcoming transfer windows.

Reading released their annual reports earlier this month amid an indefinite postponement to the season as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.

With increased speculation in recent weeks about the immediate financial future at the Madejski Stadium, Mark Bowen addressed concerns from supporters on BBC Radio Berkshire last week – admitting that the club’s current situation isn’t conducive to a summer of major investment.

"It's difficult because amongst it all you have a Chinese owner who is passionate about the club and to this day has spent almost literally hundreds of millions on the club.

"I speak to Nigel and he is very close with the owner and I know he has a huge job to repair the things that have gone on and make sure we give ourselves a fighting chance - never mind at the back end of this season when it resumes - but going into next season.

“We are doing everything we possibly can to give ourselves the best chance going into next season.

"Questions will be asked of clubs who have been through the situation and what the League wants them to do in terms of generating more revenue by selling players for example, but it looks these things aren't going to be achievable any way.

"I dread to think what's going to happen with the transfer window - I can't see a lot of clubs doing business in the current climate.

"Further down the pyramid, I certainly have a worry going into next season with regard to how much money will be spent and how many deals are done."
