Former Reading FC manager Jose Gomes has revealed the toughest tactical challenge he faced during his tenure at the club.

Speaking to The Coaches Voice Academy, Gomes revealed that when Reading faced Sheffield United, coping with The Blades' movement was his biggest managerial test during his spell at the Madejski Stadium.

Gomes said: “When we played Sheffield United, they played with three defenders. I never have – I have watched millions of games – I have never seen something like that

“In some moments of the game, the wing back has the ball and the centre back is making overlapping runs and asking for the ball. It was a fantastic dynamic with very strong team movements, and this is not easy to stop.

“They were very confident; they had a great, great season, they really played like a team.

“You can study a lot of teams playing with three defenders but it’s difficult to prepare for the movements that they did last season.

“There’s a lot of intensity in their movement and of course the capacity of their players. But they way they play like a team – and the way that all of the players knew exactly the position they should be in, at the end of the action – it’s a great job from their manager.”
