Here are our player ratings from Reading’s diabolical home defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Rafael – 3

Made a couple of decent stops to keep the score down, but three goals conceded in any game is alarming. He wasn’t really at fault for any of the goals, however.

Andy Yiadom – 2

Pegged back in an offensive capacity for the majority of the game but when he did get forward his attempted deliveries were pretty poor – and that is putting it kindly.

Michael Morrison – 1

I’m not sure if it was a deliberate tactic for Morrison to continually launch forward balls into the channel’s, but it didn’t work. As soon as Reading regained possession, Morrison lost it over and over again.

Liam Moore – 1

Looked uncharacteristically nervous on the ball and gave the ball away on numerous occasions. As captain of the side, to see Moore jogging back as Michael Jacobs chipped in Wigan’s third is incredibly concerning.

In games like yesterday, a captain needs to get the team by the scruff of the neck and do his upmost to try and turn the performance around. There were no visible signs of that.

Omar Richards – 3

Had a bit more joy going forward than Andy Yiadom – but it wasn’t hard to have less, in fairness. Got himself into trouble with his defensive positioning.

Pele – 2

Hooked off at half time after an unimpressive opening half. We’ve become accustomed to seeing Pele win more 50/50’s than he loses, but this wasn’t the case against Wigan. He was losing the physical battle and looked lost on the ball when he did turn over possession.

Ovie Ejaria – 1

Constantly dithered on the ball, trying to take too many touches rather than playing the quick pass which would’ve been a smidge more effective against Wigan’s organised defence.

Looked disinterested as soon as Wigan’s second goal went in.

John Swift – 3

Perhaps Reading’s only remotely creative player on the night – Swift wasn’t awful. He was at least trying to make things happen, even if the end product wasn’t there. Nearly found Meite in the second half with an audacious outside-of-the-boot through ball, which was one of the only times we saw a Reading man take a risk.

Felipe Araruna – 1

The less said about Araruna’s performance, the better. Constantly outmuscled off the ball and looked to withdraw back into his shell as soon as he lost the first 50/50. Many Reading fans questioned why Olise was taken out of the starting eleven, and on the basis of Araruna’s performance, that’s a fair question to ask.

Yakou Meite – 1

Could’ve been mistaken for forgetting that Meite was on the pitch for long spells. Offered virtually nothing in an offensive capacity.

Sam Baldock – 1

Spurned a glorious chance to tap in after Charlie Adam’s effort was only parried away by David Marshall. Frustrated time and time again as he mistimed his runs and was flagged offside. If Puscas was fully fit on the bench, I’d of been amazed to see Baldock finish the game.

SUBS

Charlie Adam – 2

Uncharacteristically poor with his distribution but the options further forward didn’t make it easy for Adam.

Michael Olise – 3

Olise did at least try to make things happen, having Reading’s first two shots of the game after he came up. These shots were wayward but it was at least an improvement on the dismal attempt at attacking Reading displayed in the first half.
