It was a day that no Reading fan who was at the Madejski will ever forget.

A week on from sealing promotion to the top flight for the first time, Steve Coppell’s side returned to the Madejski to face Derby County looking to seal the league title on the first day of April – a truly staggering achievement that was achieved courtesy of a 5-0 thrashing.

After Sir John Madejski had greeted a rapturous Madejski crowd, tke game got underway – with the first half not going how a lot of supporters were hoping.

Reading struggled to break down the visitors in the first half and nearly went behind but the linesman stopped Paul Peschisolido from opening the scoring for The Rams.

After a disappointing opening 45 from the newly promoted Royals, Steve Coppell’s side truly turned on the style after the break – scoring five in 45 minutes to secure the league title.

James Harper opened the scoring for Reading in the 59th minute after playing a neat one two with Dave Kitson. The midfielder latched onto Kitson’s return and finished confidently into the bottom left corner.

From then on in, the game was only going one way.

A lovely teasing cross from Bobby Convey was met by the onrushing Kevin Doyle, who doubled the hosts lead with a tidy header into the bottom corner.

John Oster made it three shortly after, reacting quickest to some hesitancy from the visiting defence to slam home from inside the area.

Skipper Graeme Murty ignored calls from the Madejski crowd for him to try his luck from out on the wing, delivering a sumptuous cross which was met at the near post by Shane Long for Reading’s fourth.

Long then completed the rout for Reading, picking up a through ball from Stephen Hunt before finishing across Derby keeper from a tight angle.

With Sheffield United only managing a draw, it was official. Reading Football Club were going to be promoted to the Premier League as champions, cue absolute bedlam at the Madejski.

Fans poured onto the pitch after the referee’s final whistle, all wanting to be a part of one of the most historic days in Reading’s history.
