WOODLEY United's new Hellenic League team manager Jamie Williams knows he has plenty of work ahead of him if he is to turn their fortunes around, writes Dave Wright.

Leaving retired player Adam Barnard to manage the side, he looked on as his side went down 2-0 to Wallingford Town at a freezing Rivermoor Stadium on Monday evening.

It was their eighth successive Division One East defeat, leaving them second bottom of the table with just four points from 13 games.

Yet, Williams will be encouraged by some of what he saw as United produced some good attacking football at times, with Freddie Barron looking particularly dangerous down the right flank, delivering some good balls into the Wallingford goalmouth. And Barron was only prevented from scoring when keeper Garry Aulsberry pulled off by far the best save of the match.

Woodley had two new signings in their starting line-up – Jamaal Whight, previously with Reading City, and former Bracknell Town player Ben Poynter, although he was forced off with an injury before half-time.

Enzo Carratala, who has moved to Reading from Spain, also came off the bench to make his debut.

United had named Gareth Ainsworth, the Wycombe Wanderers manager, in their original squad, but he wasn't able to play. Had he done so, the former Queens Park Rangers and Wycombe star may well have made a big difference.

Defensively, United did well against a Wallingford side which had put eight goals past Abingdon Town last Saturday.

The two goals they conceded were superbly taken, with Max Mohan-Triggle finding the top right-hand corner from just outside the area after 27 minutes and Euan Aitchinson heading Chase Jewell's excellent left-wing cross past keeper Adam Thompson on 39 minutes.

This coming Saturday, Woodley are away to Division Two South side Chalfont Wasps in the second round of the Bluefin Sports (UHL) Supplementary Cup (2pm).

AFC Aldermaston were beaten 3-0 at unbeaten leaders Risborough Rangers, Gary Rymer with a brace and the other goal coming from Brian Haule.

The Atom Men host Thame Rangers on Saturday.

In the Premier Division, an early Alfie Grant strike put Reading City in front at Shrivenham, but Stephen Robertson scored 10 minutes into the second half to force a share of the spoils.

The fifth-placed Citizens host Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Saturday.
