A DISAPPOINTING Woodley United ladies performance led to a 7-1 Southern League Premier Division defeat at Abingdon United.

Molly Lygo opened the scoring in the second minute following a corner kick, with Beth Hawtin and Lauren May extending the lead to 3-0 inside 18 minutes.

In between these goals Carley Chilton was required to tip an Abingdon shot over her crossbar, while for United, Ellen Surtees saw her free-kick fizz past the upright and Jodie Penny shot wide from distance.

The three-goal deficit jolted Woodley into playing and they were more competitive for the remainder of the half. Freya Jenkins was dangerous on the left wing and it was her shot from a Mollie Haines pass which won United a corner in the 33rd minute.

The visitors were able to keep the pressure on and Penny fired over before a multi-pass move saw Jenkins find Rosie Page-Smith who reduced the deficit nine minutes before half-time.

Woodley continued to show good momentum after the break, but the good work was undone in a 12-minute spell which saw the hosts score three times.

May completed her hat-trick with Steph Carrick adding a sixth in the 65th minute.

The scoring was competed by Amy Pipe three minutes from time when she evaded a flat footed Woodley defence to slot pass Chilton.

Newbury ladies Development suffered penalty heartbreak as they were knocked out of the Thames Valley Counties League Cup 4-2 on spot-kicks by Tower Hill, the sides having earlier drawn 2-2.

Abi Ayling scored both of Newbury's goals in normal time.
