New Reading FC manager Mark Bowen has denied any involvement in the sacking of Jose Gomes after the Bristol City defeat.

Bowen was installed as Royals boss earlier this week following the decision to dismiss the Portuguese after the 1-0 loss at Ashton Gate.

Despite being sporting director, Bowen was only told over the phone once the decision had been made to fire Gomes from the job.

He said: "I seen the things said out there that I was involved in the dismissal of Jose and that can't be further from the truth.

"I wasn't at the Bristol City game. I normally go to every game but I had an engagement with my family.

"I watched the game, streamed it and after the game I spoke to Jose but then I got a phonecall over the weekend to say that the decision had been made by the owner, his associates and the board that they wanted to change the manager.

"I was disappointed, disappointed for Jose because I had a fantastic relationship with him.

"I spoke to him yesterday morning and asked for advice on things as you do so my relationship with Jose hasn't changed.

"It is a natural thing that I was sporting director and people think I decide who comes in as manager. That's not true."
