EIGHT of Reading AC’s veteran athletes performed well at the British Masters Championships at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.

Karen Burles put injury concerns to one side, as she stormed to the silver medal position in the W40 100m, setting a new club record of 13.31secs, despite a headwind.

Julie Wilson (W55 category) had a busy and successful two days, competing in five events and collecting five medals.

She won a gold medal in the shot (8.49m), silver medals for discus (27.74m), hammer (32.45m) and weight throw (10.84m), and a bronze medal for the javelin (18.43m).

Sue Francis took the bronze medal in the W45 1500m (5:26.16).

Wendy Lewis was unlucky in the W50 80m hurdles race – she was challenging for the lead when she hit a hurdle and fell heavily, but she still finished the race in fourth place.

Luc Jolly took the silver medal in a very close M35 5K race, finishing just one second behind the race winner, and his time (15:59.47) was very close to his season’s best.

Dave Shields jumped well for bronze in the M55 triple jump (8.69m). Wally Franklyn just missed out on a medal in the M65 100m (4th, 13.95s), while Jan Drzewiecki was seventh in the M60 discus (37.73m).
