Reading forward Andrija Novakovich confirmed that he did have a small part to play in bringing back popular centre back and fellow countryman Matt Miazga to the Madejski Stadium.

Speaking after the final pre-season fixture against Chelsea, Novakovich confirmed that the two had spoken on the phone prior to Miazga’s return to RG2.

“He called me and was asking what is going on with the club and I told him he was here last season – he probably knew a bit more than I did!

“He enjoys it here and the club got him back. He’s happy and he is a great addition to the team and it’s positive.

“I think the signings have been great. We have brought a bit more experience into a young side and we can take positives from their experiences and their professionalism. It is important to have that in any setup.”

The USA forward has spent the last two seasons out on loan in the Dutch sides Telstar and Fortuna Sittard and hopes to make his mark at Reading in the coming campaign, having made just two league appearances for the Royals to date.

“I’m going to work hard, try my best and try to improve my game and try to get some games under my belt. I want to score some goals and be important for the team.

“I think I can do that. I believe in myself and it’s just a case of gelling with the team.”
