KATHERINE Sargeant, a coach with Reading Roadrunners, produced a sensational performance at the Southern Veterans League West Division match.

The 50-year-old won the W50 5,000 metres in 19mins 37.6secs – with the national standard for a woman of her age being 22 minutes.

It knocked more than two minutes off her personal best time.

It was Sargeant's third personal best time of the year, following new marks at both the Virgin London Marathon and the Wokingham Half Marathon.

Third in the race at Palmer Park Stadium was Reading AC's Caroline Stevens, who also finished with a creditable time of 22:58.0.

Roadrunners' Helen Pool won the W35 5,000m in a personal best time of 19:57.5sec, with Reading's Sue Francis second in 20:56.6.

In the B race, Karen Burles was first home for Reading in 23:06.2 with Claire Seymour third for Roadrunners in 23:56.0.

Reading's Debbie Forrest, was a comfortable winner of the W50 800m in 2:44.3 with Roadrunners' Tracy Jenkins clocking 3:10.2 for third place.

Julie Wilson was third for Reading in the W50 pole vault with 1.20m her best clearance, and she also won the shot with a putt of 8.96m, Roadrunners' Adele Graham finishing fourth with 6.02m.

Wilson also won the W50 discus with her throw of 26.11m, nearly nine metres further than her nearest rival at the meeting which was co-hosted by the two Reading clubs. It was also the last vets league fixture of the season.

Roadrunner Gill Manton's throw of 16.10m secured victory in the W35 discus with Sarah Ball (Reading) third.

Ball was also second in the shot with a putt of 6.44m, while Manton was fifth on 5.79.

Stella Bacon took second spot in the W60 discus with a throw of 12.41.

Reading's Debbie Taylor was fifth in the W35 800m in a time of 2:45.5 with club colleague Claire Mills third in the B string in 2:51.1.

Lee Fellowes (Reading) and Fiona Ross (RR) were fifth and sixth respectively in the W35 200 with respective times of 34.2 and 35.3, while Reading's Heidi Painting was fifth in the B string in 39.7.

Reading's Julie Rayfield crossed the line second in the W50 200 in 35.2sec, with Graham one place behind in 36.6 for Roadrunners/

Fellowes cleared 7.71m to fill third spot in the W35 triple jump, while Rayfield won the W50 triple jump with 7.92m, Graham finishing

fourth on 5.77m.

In the 4x200m relay, Reading were third in 2:11.3 and Roadrunners fifth in 2:38.5.

Reading finished a close-up second in the women's match with their total of 117 points leaving them just half a point behind the winners, Radley AC. Roadrunners were seventh with 64.5.

The end-of-season placings saw Reading finish third and Roadrunners seventh with Radley champions.

In the men's events at Palmer Park, Reading's Kevin Cranmer shared top spot in the M35 pole vault with Radley's Andy England, both clearing the bar at 2.50m. Cranmer was also third in the discus with a throw of 29.79m.

Tony McCreery was fourth in the M50 discus, reaching 21.82m, while Roadrunners' Brian Grieves was sixth with 10.16.

Tony Page (Roadrunners) took fifth place in the M35 800m by clocking 2:27.8, while club colleague Dave Fiddes was fourth in the B string with 2.42:6.

In the M50 800m, Reading's Duncan Prior was fourth, one place ahead of Roadrunner Alan Freer with times of 2.37:8 and 2:51.3 respectively.

Reading's Justin Plank secured spot place in the M35 triple jump by clearing 10.12m and Dave Shields took the same position in the M50 triple jump with 8.79m, just ahead of Roadrunner Mark Andrew on 8.79m.

Cranmer clocked 25.6sec for third place in the M35 200m with Plank recording 26.9 for third spot in the B-string, while Bob Lewis carried Reading's colours into third place in the M50 200m with 27.3sec, where Roadrunner Dave Fiddes was sixth.

Reading's Michael Dzandu won the M35 javelin with 35.78m, Alan Freer (Roadrunners) finishing seventh.

Tony McCreery (Reading) secured first place in the M60 javelin with a throw of 20.09.

Mark Worringham carried the Roadrunners' colours into second place in the M35 3,000m with a time of 9:22.5. while the Reading representative, Joe Hayes, crossed the line sixth.

The B string saw Lance Nortcliff finish third for Roadrunners.

In the M50 3,000m, Reading's Duncan Prior third in 11:33.0 and Roadrunner Tony Streams fifth in 12:23.6.

Roadrunner Alan Freer recorded a time of 12:22.9 to finish second in the M60 3,000m.

Reading were third in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1min 52.4sec, with Roadrunners seventh in 2:16.3.

This left Reading joint third with Radley in the team match, both on 90.5 points, and Roadrunners sixth on 71, with Oxford AC taking the day's honours.

Oxford, winners of all four matches, are also the overall champions, with Reading sixth and Roadrunners eighth.
