READING Athletic Club veterans contested their second league match at Tilsley Park, Abingdon, in perfect conditions.

Although fielding a much larger team than before, they were not able to fill all of the events and this cost them some points.

The men's and women's teams both finished fourth, though not far behind the third-placed teams.

There were some great individual performances with three club records broken.

The ladies fared particularly well with eight wins, five second places and three thirds.

Julie Wilson won both the W50 shot (8.67m) and discus (26.73m), while Sarah Ball was third in the W35 shot (6.66m).

Julie Rayfield won the W50 triple jump in fine style, setting a new W50 club record of 8.05m.

Karen Burles was first in the W35 triple jump in 8.91m, having not done the event for 20 years, and she was also a clear winner of the W35 200m A-race; her time of 27.2s beating her own W40 club record.

Cathy Begley was third in the W35 B-race (34.2s).

It was a clean sweep for Reading in the W35 800m with Sue Francis first home in the A-race (2:38.0) and Claire Mills likewise in the B-race (3:01.1).

Linda Church was third in the W50 race (3:09.9) having done well in a triathlon the previous day.

In the W35 3k, Sarah Urwin-Mann led from start to finish in 11:18.0.

Belinda Tull was second in the B-race (13:03.9), while Debbie Forrest was runner-up in the W50 (12:57.0).

Reading had three non-scorers in the 3k with W50 Sian Rollings clocking 13:43.5, Heidi Painting (W35), back on the track after more than 15 years, recording 16:57.0, and Caroline Stevens (W50) finishing in 16:59.0.

Mills, Urwin-Mann, Burles and Francis won the 4x400m relay in 4:44.3.

In the men's events, Ray Stevens (M70) was second home in the M60 2k walk with a time of 13:44.0, just short of his own club record, and he went on to finish eighth in the M60 200m B-race (27.0s).

In the M35 200m, Kevin Cranmer was third in the A-race (25.4s) and Justin Plank second in the B-race (27.0s). Cranmer went on to win the pole vault (2.40m) with Plank fourth in the triple jump (10.24m).

Dave Shields was fourth in the M50 triple jump with 8.55m, while Jan Drzewiecki won the M60 discus (37.58m) and M35 competitor Michael Dzandu was third in both the discus (23.15m) and javelin (35.17m).

Luc Jolly took third place in the M35 800m A-race, his time of 2:10.5 setting a new club record.

The 4x400m relay team of Plank, Duncan Prior, Andy McDonald and Jolly finished seventh (4:30.1).

A number of Reading athletes returned to Abingdon for the Southern Counties Veterans Championships on Saturday.

Burles had an exceptional day, winning three gold medals and setting two club W40 records for the 100m (12.95s), which had stood for 13 years, and the 200m (26.85s). She also won the long jump with 4.56m.

Francis was first home in the the W45 1,500m in 5:31.59, while Drzewiecki (M60) won the hammer (33.52m) and discus (39.75m).
