READING won England Hockey's Men's Over 50s Tier Championship by defeating Stourport 4-1 at Lee Valley on Monday.

Blues, coached by Nick Barton, were quick out of the blocks with two goals inside the opening five minutes from Terry Pollard and Ian Hammond.

Stourport halved their deficit through Tim Wood in the 37th minute, only for Andy Spooner to reply for Reading two minutes later and captain Andy Holden added the fourth goal a minute from time.

The Sonning Lane club, however, missed out on a national double as Reading Rockets were beaten by Oxted in the final of the Investec Women’s T3 Championships which went to a penalty shoot-out at Lee Valley.

They made a good start as Jemma Stephenson finished off a well-executed field goal before Ellie Mann doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.

However, Oxted fought back in the second half to draw level through Hannah White and Laura Johnstone, but Shannon Ross restored the lead for Reading in the 59th minute.

Oxted continued to plug away and an Olivia Francis goal made it 3-3 to take the game to a penalty shoot-out.

Stephenson and White each netted with their side's first attempt, but there were then amazingly nine misses before White scored Oxted's sudden-death winner.

Reading have another chance to secure a second national title as they play Marden Russets in the Boys U18s Tier 3 Championship final at Sonning Lane this Sunday at 9am.

The club are hosting a full weekend of junior finals at U18s and U14s levels.
