FOURTH-PLACED Woodley United eased past visiting basement side Newbury 4-1 in their Southern Region Premier Division clash on Sunday.

The hosts started brightly and took the lead after just eight minutes, a rebound falling to May Hamblin who wriggled into the penalty area and placed a composed finish low into the bottom far corner.

Woodley could have moved further in front on 18 minutes, only for Rosie Paige-Smith's penalty to be well saved by player-of-the-match Kat Brown.

Becky Anderson could have levelled only to be superbly denied midway through the first half, and Newbury again came close in the second period when Amy McNab had a shot brilliantly cleared off the line.

The hosts strengthened their grip on the game on 73 minutes when Amie Benton found the back of the net, and they effectively killed the contest off when she added a second.

Newbury responded, though, and they gave themselves a lifeline in the 79th minute.

Substitute Amie Barnard was upended in the box and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a spot-kick, Leanne Saunders showing good composure to stride forward and slam home the penalty to make the score 3-1.

Newbury were unable to breach the Woodley defence any further and it was the hosts who wrapped up the scoring in the 88th minute, Hamblin adding her second to add gloss to the scoreline.

A Maria Rodrigues brace, an Alex Kovacsova strike and an own goal helped Newbury Development secure a 4-1 victory against Caversham Swans in Division Two South of the Thames Valley Counties League.

Joint players-of-the-match were Kelly Killick and Kovacsova.

l BARTON Rovers returned to action following a three-week break, but were thumped 7-0 at home by table-topping AFC Bournemouth CST in their Southern Region Premier Division clash.

Rosie Eden and Chloe Tape both scored twice, with the other goals from Terri Harvey, Katie Kingshott and Rebecca Miles.

In Division Two South of the Thames Valley Counties League, Barton Rovers Royals were beaten 3-2 at Westwood Wanderers.

The hosts went 2-0 in front, but Barton hit back when a Caitlyn Levy free-kick was parried into the path of Leah North to fire home.

The away side levelled in the second half when India Cox, making her first start, prodded home from a corner, but Westwood had the last say as they struck in the dying moments.
