READING City were dumped out of the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup following a 4-1 defeat at Division One West side Thornbury Town, writes Richard Ashton.

The home side took control with a devastating seven-minute burst around the half-hour mark, Craig Lancastle putting them in front before doubling the advantage shortly after.

A third goal, courtesy of Asher Budd, arrived on 36 minutes, and Thornbury went into the half-time interval with a 3-0 lead.

City battled hard in the second period and gave themselves a lifeline when Ousman Darboe converted from the penalty spot on 62 minutes, but it was Town who were to have the last word, Lancastle completing his hat-trick to end a disappointing afternoon for Simon Johnson's visitors.

City assistant manager Sam Woodruff admitted: "It was a poor result – we must battle and work together for 90 minutes.

"We know as a group it’s going to be a tough season, but as a club we are trying everything we can to get back to winning ways."

Reading City – who are 16th in the Premier Division – were due to travel to Brackley Town Saints in the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup last night, before another journey to Brimscombe & Thrupp in the league on Saturday (3pm).

WOODLEY United endured mixed success as they advanced in the Supplementary Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 home win against Chalvey Sports, only to exit the Reading Senior Cup following a 3-2 extra-time home defeat to Ardley United on Monday.

The Kestrels had to come from behind against Chalvey, Bryan Taylor's penalty giving the visitors a 1-0 half-time lead.

However, Woodley responded, and goals from Harry Swabey and Ed Thomas were enough to see them through.

United trailed 2-0 against Ardley going into the last five minutes – Tobias London and Harley Giles with the goals – only for late strikes from Freddie Barron and Adam Barnard to send the game into extra time.

However, their hopes were dashed a minute into the second period of extra time, Conor Harris with the vital goal.
